In today’s world with people endeavouring to manage their overhead costs, working from home has become a popular choice. There are bonuses from working from home - you can set the time of day you work, the clothing you wear and the environment that suits you.

Unfortunately, without some rules in place it can lead to overwork or the loss of work/life balance. Also, home can be a distracting environment.

To minimise the effect of any of the negatives, and ensure you have a good balance ,you could try the following:

  • Set yourself office hours , a finish time, and stick to it. It doesn’t have to be 9 to 5.
  • Make sure that you give yourself regular breaks during the day. You need to take a break at least every 11/2 to 2 hours.
  • Switch off any personal browsers or applications that could distract you from the tasks ahead.
  • Move around. Try to ensure that you take breaks away from the office space.
  • Keep your office area tidy. A tidy environment is more relaxing than an unruly mess.
  • Work in the area you have set up as an office. Don’t take your work into family and relaxation spaces.
  • Don’t be a loner, take advise when you need to.
  • Once your day is done, set technology boundaries and make sure you have at least 30 minutes’ break from them before a scheduled bed time. Don’t take your phone to bed.
  • Exercise and enjoy your new lifestyle.
