There were three things we knew for certain when we started out in business and it is these three things that we often refer to and remind ourselves about.

We thought it would be a really good idea to share our learnings. This blog discusses our thoughts on the first point.

  1. Why do you want to go in to business and what do you want to achieve?
  2. It takes time to build a business.
  3. You must put a lot of hours in to build a business.

Why Do You Want to Be in Business?

Know what you are wanting to achieve and stick to your guns.

Before we even decided to start our business, we had a lot of discussion around its look and feel, what our values were and how we thought we could go about achieving our dream. We knew if we didn’t have the same vision there was no point in continuing further. We also knew that we needed the support of our families.

I know that words like values and visions are used a lot and seem a bit flowery but make sure you are on the same page and have the same dream if you are entering in to a partnership.

As our journey progresses opportunities have come along that have excited us and seemed like easier pathways to money and security. The initial excitement and the feeling of pride was followed by a brief but very unsettled time. After a few sleepless nights and lots of discussion we had to refer to point number one. What were our reasons for getting in to business, what did we want to achieve, and were these opportunities going to fit our model. The short answer was NO.

Back on track and able to move forward again, (until the next disruption) we have learnt that it is okay to say NO (in fact imperative), and that we are clear about our goals and how we want to achieve them.

If you have a dream, an idea, or are thinking about getting into business, we’d love to hear from you. The first catch up and coffee is on us.
